Getting mellow with Aaron Fleming

selfie bw low res

I’m beginning to think someone is putting something in the water, because I am stumbling across so many talented teenagers lately.

Aaron is a seventeen year old Irish lad who carries on the tradition of the many talented Irish musicians. He first started uploading covers to YouTube in 2012 to test the waters, as he was unsure whether he wanted to pursue a career in music. Then he met Nina Nesbitt in Dublin and it became clear to him that music was his first love. He told me he has been writing songs but is not happy with most of them, which explains only one original track on Youtube – Catching Stars. Apparently he nearly gave up on music altogether to pursue photography, all I can say is thank goodness he came back. For someone who has only been playing guitar for 3 years it is obvious that he is a natural. Then there is his voice, it’s slightly husky with that Irish lilt that gets me every time. I doubt that anyone reading this will know what I’m talking about when I say he reminds me of Donovan, so think Ed Sheeran, Ben Howard and Dan Smith.

Aaron has promised to send me more original tracks when he records them after he has finished his leaving cert. He plans on going to University in Dublin in September and what better place to hone his musical skills. I know people say it’s important to get an education, but I hope he takes advantage of the music scene in Dublin. I for one will be watching closely to see how his raw talent develops.

Run – Review

Image

Take two brothers, add a best friend, then a large sprinkle of talent and what do you get?

Canadian band – RUN

Liam Cyr  (21)- Vocals & Guitar

Aidan Cyr (17) – Drums & Backing vocals

Joey Jesso (23) – Bass & Backing Vocals

This is what Liam told me about the band.

Liam and Joey  began playing together in their church choir, Liam  played drums back then. Aidan took over the drums when Liam wanted to experiment with writing. Because Aidan was too young to play in bars, Liam and Joey  would play acoustic sets as a duo.
After some time playing together, Liam and Aidan’s father hopped on board to support them. They traveled to Nashville to record their first EP - Fugue. That attracted the attention of their father’s buddy from college (Dave Way) who was working in Los Angeles as a Producer/Engineer. Dave has worked with Michael Jackson, Foo Fighters, Christina Aguilera and Macy Gray, to name but a few.
The next summer, they traveled to Los Angeles to record their first full-length album with Dave Way. It’s currently being mixed and mastered, ready to be released in the Fall, to coincide with them touring. They have also just released their first single – Flare.

So that’s the background, now to the music.

I have to say that I was gobsmacked by the level of professionalism and talent in this band. They possess a quality and tightness that usually only comes after a few years of touring.

Liam’s voice has a natural vibrato that he uses to perfection. His songwriting is fresh and has produced some very intricate, yet catchy tracks. On top of that he is an excellent guitarist, and by the sounds of it a multi-talented musician.(Remember he was originally the drummer). Oh and some of you may recognize his name especially if you are Canadian, as he plays Jimmy De Grazia in the sitcom Mr D. Is there anything he can’t do?

Joey plays his 5 string bass like a pro. What more can I say?

Aidan? Well I have to keep reminding myself he is only 17! His drumming is so tight he is punching way above his weight. I have listened to a lot of up and coming bands lately, and I have noticed some of the drummers are only just holding things together. Some of their drum rolls sound more like they fell off their stool in the middle. Not this guy, it appears this family was blessed with more than their fair share of talent.

Their EP- Fugue shows off their talents over a range of music styles, albeit it with their own inimitable stamp.

This band won’t be easily pigeon-holed, which can only be a good thing. Perhaps if I go over a few of their tracks you will see why.

Rings of Saturn could be described as a progressive rock track with an edge. The chorus flows over you with a haunting melody and the addition of soundbites in the mix just add to its quality.

Shock Dillusion has more of the rock/punk edge to it.

Lay it Down leans towards the blues, the brass backing is superb.

Now to their single Flare.

I love the driving rhythm and the dirty guitar sound. It has a few quirky additions with synths and sound effects, but they just enhance the whole experience. This song will get stuck in your head as it has mine.

As with all their tracks, you can tell they have been professionally produced, the quality is awesome. This is the first track I have heard that has been produced by Dave Way, it just makes me eager to hear the whole album.

The fact that they are still growing as a band, points the way to a long and very successful career in music. Plus they seem like genuinely nice guys. Just hope they don’t forget me when they get as big as Muse :)

Anyway, don’t just take my word for it. Go and check them out.

Oh and guys, you owe me a copy of the album ;)

Fahran – review

Image

I probably should have waited to do this review, as Fahran have a new album due out soon and I have only heard two tracks with their new vocalist Matt Black. Perhaps if I don’t piss them off too much, I might get to hear the new stuff soon. (hint)

Having said that I am torn about this band. They are obviously great musicians, I like the songs that I have heard, they are slick and well produced. However, I am torn when it comes to their new vocalist, Matt Black. My first thought when I saw their promo pictures and the video for Take This City Alive was….. why does the lead singer for a rock band look like he should be fronting a boy band? Ok, so the haircut doesn’t make him a bad singer and at least in their other video, he is wearing a beanie lol. But then we come to his voice, and after listening to the two tracks and watching a couple of live performances on YouTube, I’m still uncertain whether I like it or not. It’s not that he’s bad, on the contrary he has a great vocal range and can belt out those screams with the best of them. There is just something about it that doesn’t sit right with me when it comes to being a rock vocalist. The closest I can come to the effect his voice has on me, is when I first heard Rush. After being subjected to every album, by a so called friend, I vowed never to listen to them ever again. (It was Geddy Lee’s voice that did it). Matt says that one of his influences is Foreigner, I watched a couple of his videos with a tribute band and meh, he’s no Lou Gramm.

Anywhoo. I apologise Matt, I’m not bashing you I promise, and I hope that once I have heard the full album, you might have won me over. I’m just glad I live down in the depths of Cornwall, so there’s not much chance of him turning up on my doorstep to bitch slap me.

One of the things I really like about this band, is the fact they have two guitarists who are capable of playing lead. When I heard the way Jake Graham and Chris Byrne swap between lead and rhythm, then play duets an octave apart. It reminded me of the good old days of Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham in Thin Lizzy. Plus I gather that Jake is responsible for the slick production on their records. (Not just a pretty face :)

Drummer JR Windsor and Bass player Joshua Ballantyne, complete the line up with a solid rhythm section.

Considering that the band have had to replace a vocalist and bass player in the last year, they are tight and producing some great music. I’m looking forward to hearing the new album (I guess I will have to buy it now that I’ve trashed the vocalist) eek!

But this is just the opinion of a lowly, struggling Indie author. So I don’t think many people will take any notice.

Plus, if Matt wins me over when the album is released I will just have to eat humble pie on here :)

The Mercy House – review

The mercy house

Metal Hammer described this band as “Cynicism-curing, balls-out hard rock glory….at last, here’s a band with it’s own agenda. And which doesn’t suck.”

They weren’t kidding.

With powerful and gutsy vocals, stomach trembling bass lines, guitar riffs that can be subtle and melodious, then switch to screaming harmonics. This band has it all.

Listening to their first Album; A Broken State of Bliss, which was released in 2012, made me feel as if I was being cleansed of all the pop crap that has been bombarding my ears for so long. Tracks range from the heavy; My Disease, which has an amazing hook that sticks in your head. To The End, which is more fluid and spine tingling. These guys really show what versatile musicians they are. Oh and, judging by the photo from last Fridays gig, their guitarist brings a whole new meaning to the word shredding.

On top of all this, their lyrics speak out against social injustice and attempt to break down the forces that are silencing us all. A rock band with a message, what more could you ask for?

From everything that I have read about them, they are a hardworking band, whether it is touring relentlessly or working on new material. And everyone, including me is wondering why the hell they haven’t been signed yet?

I can’t wait to hear their second album.

You have my attention guys. Now please come down to Cornwall, I need to see you play live.

Jimmy Mowery – One to watch

Image

So, here is another musician who randomly followed me on Twitter and all I can say is, thank you.

Jimmy has it all, great voice, talented guitarist, very catchy songs. Oh and did I forget to mention he is hotttt!!

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not one of those people who thinks you have to be good looking to make great music. But in today’s fickle music industry it certainly helps, although I really wished it didn’t. We can thank people like Simon Cowell for perpetuating this idea. Thank God there are still plenty of people who appreciate the music and talent, rather than just looking at a pretty face.

I always  go to listen to new musicians with some trepidation, because you never know what you will hear. After all, I am in the UK, he is in South Carolina. I’ve never heard of him and that probably applies to the majority of people. All I have to say after listening to his songs is; Why the hell isn’t this guy signed and being heard all over the radio?

My favourite track is, This is war. It’s edgy and I love the guitar sound he creates, the lyrics are sung from the heart (Hmmm I wonder if he got burned by someone in the past?). Throughout the history of music, most of the classic songs come from either meeting or breaking up with someone, because that’s one thing that we all have in common and can identify with. Whether it’s first love or venting at the one who broke your heart. Musicians do it through their songs whereas writers (like myself) do it in stories.

His voice and style of songs reminds me a little of Justin Timberlake, which can’t be a bad thing. His bio says he identifies with bands like Maroon 5 and yes I can hear that too. He has a great vocal range and isn’t afraid to belt out those notes.

I’ve watched some of his live performances on YouTube, and he is impressive even with just an acoustic, sitting on a stool singing his heart out. The only thing that annoyed me was the noisy crowd, really people, show some appreciation. I am looking forward to seeing him play his own songs live, perhaps with a decent backing band, as most of the videos were of him performing covers. Although I have to say, his mash up of Boulevard of Broken Dreams/Wonderwall is awesome.

So come on you music industry people, sign this guy up now. I assure you, he will give all of the tacky boy bands a run for their money and perhaps we can get back to having real musicians in the charts.

I love music

Yes I love music and musicians. I need music to write and to do just about everything, it has always been a big part of my life. Different songs remind me of specific moments in my life. I use it to make me happy and to wallow when I’m sad. It’s no surprise that my favourite stories to write are based around musicians. Shit, I was even married to one for quite a while, and was the roadie and sound engineer for his band.
Now I get to enjoy discovering new musicians and music thanks to Twitter. I’m not sure why, but some bands and solo artists have started to follow me on there. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining at all, it’s a great way to discover new talent.
Seeing as they probably wouldn’t be interested in my Rock Star romances, and I wanted to say thanks. I have decided to do regular posts on here, introducing you to these wonderful artists.
Please enjoy and support them if you like what you hear.
The first band is a two piece called – Lost in a Name. They are an independent band who are using Pledgemusic.com to fund their recordings. As an Indie author I feel that it’s only right that I support bands like this. I know how hard it is to get your work out there.
Danny Schmitz (Guitar) and Geoff Slater (Drums), manage to produce the sound of a four piece band. Yes I know how that works when recording, but I have read great reviews of their live shows as well. One thing you won’t find on their cd’s is computer enhanced vocals or any of the other rubbish that mediocre ‘pop bands’ use. These guys are rock musicians, as is proved by the sound they produce.
I am proud to say that I am a fan of theirs, and they seem like genuinely nice guys who care about their fans as well. I received some lovely messages from them and a signed EP for pledging my support. They don’t know I am doing this, so don’t think for one second that they have bought my support.
So please head over and say high and that I sent you, here are some links and please check out the track Poison, that I have included.

Settle? Huh not me

I have a few feeds on my Facebook page of eye candy for women, yeah so what, it’s all in fun and men do it so why shouldn’t women? But a comment caught my eye under one picture of a particularly hunky guy, the woman wrote: I would love a guy like this but had to settle with what I got?? Why the hell should anyone settle if it’s not what they really want? OK so she might not be in the league of one of these guys and it may be a cliche but a lot of the male models are gay (shoot me for stereotyping) but they are. But come on, settle?

I may have settled for way too many years but in the end I saw the light and got out, and yes my love life has been somewhat rocky since. I jump in and see hearts and roses way too quickly and yeah I get burned, but the ride was worth it, maybe I’m some kind of love junkie ( a bit like an adrenaline junkie) perhaps that feeling of euphoria is the same. I suppose it all has to do with endorphin’s in the end. Anyway, whatever it is that pulls me into yet another disastrous relationship at least I don’t and will never just settle! I want it all and by god I intend to get it even if it kills me. Perhaps that’s why I write romance novels, I’m hoping I can write my romantic lead out of the book and into my arms….well a girl can dream can’t she?
